What do Facebook’s News Feed changes mean for social media marketing?

Wednesday, August 23rd, 2017

Recently, Facebook announced that it will be rolling out some changes to their News Feed over the next few weeks. Don’t worry if you’re in charge of social media marketing; nothing is going to be astronomically different. But, It is important to be in the know so you can keep getting the most out of the site for your business.

Here’s a summary.

Updated Link Previews

Facebook’s News Feed changes come on the heels of a pivot in the way users have been using Facebook. You’ve probably seen this pivot when navigating the news feed of your personal account. Status updates and wall posts have been replaced by sharing. Most often, this sharing comes in the form of GIFs, videos or links.  Facebook is catering to this with their changes.

What does this tell the social media marketing inclined? You should be using them! Photos, GIFs and videos are all interactive, drawing customers to your page. This increased engagement will work to grow your follower base.

Increased Readability of Comment Sections

In addition to an improved layout for shared posts, Facebook is updating the comment section. “We’re always working to help people have more lively and expressive conversations on Facebook. More and more, comments have become the way to have conversations about a post with other people,” they say.

Now’s a great time to start putting this feature to work for your social media marketing. Post links to similar content, ask questions to your customers or get them to tag their friends.

Circular Photos

In terms of social media marketing, this one could probably be filed under the “minor, but important” category. Facebook’s profile pictures are making the switch from square to circular. This should still provide a nice frame for the selfie you posted, but your company’s logo could get cut off with the new dimensions. Just do a quick check to ensure the whole logo is in there and you’re good to go.
