Local SEO – Google Pigeon Algorithm Update

Tuesday, October 28th, 2014

Yupe, it’s that time again that Google puts out a new update. This time local search results will be affected by the new Google Pigeon Algorithm. This new programming provides more accurate relevant results for local searches.

To see if your site was impacted by the change, look in your analytics software for organic traffic levels in late July and August. If you are targeting specific markets, be sure to segment your organic traffic by location. In Canada the updated algorithm was noticed in local results in late August.

This is great news for local businesses. If you have your information in local directories up-to-date you and your website will reap the benefits. As time passes on the changes will be become more visible. Review sites such as Yelp, Urbanspoon, Yellowpages Trip Advisor appear more frequently after a local search. This new algorithm does not seek to penalize web sites with poor SEO practices, as was previously the case with Google Penguin. These changes will mainly affect geographically targeted local queries.
