Inspirational Speaker Angus Reid Shares His Life Lessons With Us

Today at the monthly Kamloops Chamber Luncheon event, members of the Kamloops Chamber had the pleasure of listening to an inspirational speech by Angus Reid. We would like to share some of our insights on his speech that he gave today, and why it’s so important these teachings are valuable for everyone.

Throughout Angus’ life, he has undergone many hardships as well as highlights. Some very lows, and some very highs. Those kinds of stories paired with his sense of humour and unique ability to keep his audience interested are what made him such a joy to listen to! We can confidently say that no one in the room today was bored. But that’s besides the point.

Angus had many life lessons that he shared with us today, but here are three that we would like to focus on.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help.

In his speech, Angus especially pointed out the men in the room for this one. He joked about how men never ask for directions even when they’re hopelessly lost. His point here was to throw away that logic.

Throw away that pride!

You may think that you can take on many different huge challenges, but you need to be able to ask for help at the right times. Don’t be afraid to reach out to those who can lend a hand. People love to help out those they care about.

You can take it from the legend himself: If you’re sinking, all you have to do is ask for a hand.

It’s hard, but don’t give up.

We know that the “don’t give up” speech can be quite cliche, but the way Mr. Reid described it today was different from the usual lecture.

Throughout most of our lives, we encounter someone who has the audacity to say “you’re not good enough”, “you’ll never make it”, “just give up”. Angus Reid’s life has been no different. When he tried out for his high school football team in grade 11, his coach would bench him and tell Reid that he wasn’t a strong enough player.

When Angus asked why, his coach gave him a list of reasons to back his argument. Instead of believing in what his coach had told him, Angus worked his hardest to rectify his weaknesses.

“You don’t know enough about the sport and the plays,” his coach stated.

“Then I’ll learn them!” Angus replied.

“You just aren’t big enough to play your position,” the coach had said.

“Then I’ll eat more and work out!” Angus countered.

“You aren’t fast enough,” the coach retorted.

“I’ll learn from the track team!” Angus came back.

Even though his coach gave him a whole list of reasons for him to not play on the football team, Angus wanted to play so bad that he was willing to work to fix his weaknesses, and turn them into his strengths. And of course, Angus went on to play 13 very successful years in the Canadian Football League.

“If you want something bad enough, you need to be able to work for it. Have the willpower to turn your dreams into a reality for yourself. Work your hardest, because no one else will work hard for you. “

Believe that you can win no matter the odds are.

This third point, Angus himself stated, is both a blessing as well as a curse.

If you want to achieve your goals, you need to be able to believe in yourself even when things look down, and all seems impossible.

Believing in yourself can be a total game changer when faced with the decision of to give up, or to not give up. You need to be able to believe in yourself, even if no one else does. If you want to succeed, this is a must. You have to be stubborn and focused to stay in control of your destiny.

Ask for help, don’t give up, believe in yourself.

What do you think about these life lessons? What’s your biggest takeaway?
