Business owners can learn from the conversations on social media

This week, we wrote of Facebook’s News Feed changes with the hope it would be insightful for social media marketers and business owners alike. Now we hope we can keep these insights going by giving insights into Facebook’s insights. Also, no, that wasn’t the lamest tongue twister of all time. It instead existed as a nod to an extensive report recently published by Zuckerberg & Co. that provides significant data on consumer habits and interests.

It was published via Facebook IQ, an extension of the larger company made up of researchers who decipher what everything happening on the social media platform means for human race. For the first time, they have put together a report that summarizes a year’s worth of observation. We’ve read what is known as the Annual Topics & Trends Report and were impressed by the broad swath of coverage it provided. Business owners in beauty and fashion, retail, hospitality and finance are some, not even all, of the industries that could find insights in the report.

As fantastically all-encompassing the report is, business owners shouldn’t feel the need to replicate Facebook’s scale. If you’re new to data and analysis it’s best to start small. So, try, at first, to keep an eye on what your followers are up to. By understanding their interests, you’ll have a larger picture of your customer base. This will help you in the development or updating of the products or services you offer and the marketing campaigns you create.

We have heard time and time again that data is at the core of marketing. It allows you to understand who makes up your customer base and how you can meet them where they are. Are you a business owner? Want help deciphering what the conversations your customers are having mean? Or, want somebody to crunch the data for you?
