Twitter became a social media platform for many (284 million users sending out 500 million tweets everyday). On Twitter you can follow or unfollow people easily. However, remember your tweets are always public.

When I mention about twitter and #hashtags to some of my clients I hear What’s Twitter? How it can be useful for my business? What are hashtags?

In this post, I try to address why your business should be on twitter and how you can increase your twitter followers. Like any marketing campaign, it is important to have a right strategy to build relationships on social media. You can tweet a variety of content including you favorite cat pictures to a Gagnam style video (Watched more than 2 billion times). Make content marketing strategy as part of your social media strategy.

Why your business should have a Twitter account?

One simple answer is because your customers are on twitter. Going to the basics of business growth and survival, your business need to generate sales and positive cash flow. As a business owner, you need to advertise your business to your prospects all the time. How quickely you can reach your customers and how you can adopt the message to build brand ambassodors is the key to success. This is possible through a variety of social media and online platforms. Reaching your audiance on the right platform at the right time with a right content piece usually generates interest in your business.

What’s changed with the technology is access to your prospective customers on social media platforms (an open market) which is the internet. Twitter is one of these platforms with 284 million users. Your prospects are tweeting away at their convenience about what is going on in their life and what they like about brands and what not. This provides your business an opportunity to listen, communicate and engage. Build relationships directly with your customers. This could not have been this quick with traditional media. The customer has to walk in to find your special offers or new products you just imported spending thousands of dollars in credit! Building your specific customers base on various social media platforms is helpful to let your audience know about what’s new with your business, why they should come to you rather than your competition?
The world we live in has changed so much that people want instant information. They are searching online or asking their Facebook friends for referrals.

But still, how do I know Twitter is the right platform for my business?

To be successful on Twitter you have to define who your ideal customers are. Are they families with young kids or singles under 30 years old or teenagers who never put their phone down and glued to their tablets and mobiles.
