Alphabet – G is For Google
There has been a lot of talk about the alphabet lately in the tech industry and not in the traditional language sense. Alphabet is the new umbrella company that will have Google underneath it.
Google made an announcement on their blog earlier this month.
What is Alphabet? Alphabet is mostly a collection of companies. The largest of which, of course, is Google. This newer Google is a bit slimmed down, with the companies that are pretty far afield of our main Internet products contained in Alphabet instead.
It is the company’s idea to allow better focus on each venture that Google has been involved in. Everything from Life Sciences to Nest will be underneath this new parent company.
Businesses spinning off from Google to become separate companies under Alphabet:
- Calico (life-extension biotech research)
- Nest (maker of the Nest Thermostat and other smart home products)
- Fiber (high-speed Internet service)
- Ventures and Capital (early and growth-stage investing)
- X lab (“moonshot” research incubator that includes projects such as self-driving cars and delivery drones)
There has been a lot of controversy in the community. Some comments are quite hilarious:
What are your thoughts on Google being the ‘child’ to the new parent company Alphabet?
Do you think that Alphabet will usher a new era of Google Innovation?
How do you re-brand Google?
Keep an eye on this development, we know that we will!
